Cathy Guisewite has an Emmy for a Cathy animated special. Go figure.
scary how much Lydia looks a little bit like a Cathy clone. plus never had Lydia as some one who liked cathy. and surprise she did not go postal on that lady for asking if Lydia was upset over Cathy ending.
The above comment is so good that I am breaking the Chad Embargo for it. I think you all understand why.
There was a Cathy animated special? On a related note, I recently threw away the vhs tape I had of the Doonsebury animated special. I, of course, rewatched it to see why I thought I needed to own it in the first place. It wasn’t awful, and in fact, it was a little charming. I recommend it as something to see if you can remember when Joanie showed up at the Walden Commune and needed a place to be an independent woman.
Guisewite/zeitgeist – hee. Wordplay!
PS Birdie really nailed the Cathy homage. It seems like a simple art style, but as I am not an artist (only in my soul (double hugstyle)), I was wondering if it was difficult to capture that last panel?
It was harder than I expected, actually.
You are probably already familiar with David Malki’s take on Cathy, but I thought it was appropriate to link to it, given you touch on (and slightly diverge?) from some of his thoughts: http://wondermark.com/the-comic-strip-doctor-cathy/
I was really into Cathy when I was a teenager, but I agree with Lydia about her time being done.
The first panel hits home with me. It seems like every time something comic-related is in the news or they see something at Walmart, my work colleagues (who don’t understand comics at all) can’t wait to tell me about it. You know, the old “You like everything that has to do with comics….” UGH!
There was a Chad embargo? I guess he didn’t just fade away, then. Thanks for sharing the gems.
